‘Not competent’: Attorney on client accused in child shooting death

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The lawyer for a man accused of attacking a family and a neighbor in an incident last week that led to the death of a 3-year-old girl tells 6 News his client is not competent to stand trial.

Court documents obtained by 6 News break down the events of the attack, such as witness testimony, a review of nearby doorbell camera footage, and the arrest of Alexander Banks Jr., 21, when someone called 911 and reported that a man two miles away from where the attack took place was saying he had shot someone.

Banks was later charged with multiple felonies, including first-degree premeditated murder, for allegedly attacking a family of three and a 72-year-old woman who lived nearby and attempted to assist the family, seriously injuring all four of them. The 3-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Her parents were last reported to be in stable condition. The 72-year-old neighbor remains in critical condition.
