LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A Michigan State Police patrol vehicle and a Perry Fire Department fire truck were struck by tractor-trailers in separate crashes on eastbound Interstate 69 in Shiawassee County. The collisions occurred late Saturday night and early Sunday morning during icy road conditions.
The crashes took place east of Morrice Road while emergency crews were on the scene of an earlier traffic accident. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and two emergency vehicles were damaged in the series of collisions that kept the freeway closed for several hours.
The first crash occurred around 11:35 p.m. on Feb. 21, 2026. A Flint Post Trooper was parked on the shoulder of the freeway with emergency lights activated while policing an earlier traffic crash. The trooper had just returned to the patrol vehicle when a tractor-trailer lost control on the icy roadway and struck the car. Both the patrol vehicle and the semi-truck sustained disabling damage, but no injuries were reported in this initial collision.
Approximately 3 hours later, a second tractor-trailer struck a Perry Fire Department fire truck at the same scene. At around 2:30 a.m., the fire truck was positioned to block the freeway when the semi-truck t-boned it.
