Deputy cleared in deadly Ingham County shooting

INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – The Department of Attorney General has completed its review of the officer-involved shooting of Cameron Cothern on April 6, 2025, concluding that no charges will be filed against the officer involved. It was determined the officer acted in self-defense and to protect others. The Michigan State Police First District Investigative Section conducted the investigation.

On that day, an Ingham County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to 9-1-1 calls about a man walking southbound on the northbound side of US-127 without a car in sight. Near mile marker 61, the Deputy found Cameron Cothern, who was holding a knife in each hand and approaching the patrol car. The Deputy requested backup and, to ensure safety, reversed his patrol car while using the vehicle’s public address system to assure Cothern he was there to help and instructed him to move to the side of the highway.

Despite more than 20 reassurances and 15 orders to drop his weapons over eleven minutes, Cothern continued advancing toward the vehicles, sometimes crouching or running between them, until the officers could no longer proceed…
