AG Nessel: No charges will be filed against deputy who shot knife-wielding man on US-127

INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office has determined an Ingham County Sheriff’s deputy acted in self-defense and defense of others during an officer-involved shooting death last spring.

This week the AG’s office concluded its review of the April 6, 2025 shooting death of Cameron Cothern and determined no charges will be issued. Nessel’s office did not identify the deputy who shot and killed Cothern.

The Michigan State Police First District Investigative Section investigated the shooting, which happened near mile marker 61 on US-127 near Vevay Township. Authorities received multiple 911 calls that day reporting a man was walking southbound on the northbound portion of the highway, with no apparent vehicle nearby…
