Painful title: Springport’s Burns injures ankle, still wins

DETROIT — A state championship for Springport junior Wyatt Burns brought a lot of pain along with the glory.

Battling Riverview Gabriel Richard’s AJ Barnabei in the Division 4, 144-pound title tilt, he led 6-0, and was looking to add to that lead, when disaster struck. Burns tried to take Barnabei down, but as they went to the mat, Barnabei landed on his left ankle.

“I was going to score again and I was getting around him and my ankle got caught somewhere,” Burns said. “I don’t know exactly what happened. And I heard a loud pop and I knew I either broke it or something bad, but I couldn’t put any pressure on it the rest of the match.”…
