Three people were sentenced in the 56th Circuit Court of Eaton County after pleading guilty to an identity theft and fraud scheme totaling $579,551.99.
47-year-old Averill Dintamin and 51-year-old Daniel Nolan, both from Mount Pleasant, attempted to steal a man’s identity by forging a power of attorney to obtain an unclaimed property check in the victim’s name. Dintamin and Nolan recruited 60-year-old Dwayne Johnson, from Saint Louis, to serve as the victim at the Department of Treasury when attempting to claim the check.
“This was a deliberate attempt to steal more than half a million dollars from the State of Michigan and from the rightful owner of these funds, and I am thankful for the diligent work of the Department of Treasury and the prosecutors in my office who worked tirelessly to secure these convictions,” said Attorney General Nessel. “We remain committed to ensuring that those who commit identity theft, fraud or forgery are held accountable.”…
