A man was found living in a van with 36 dogs in Michigan, and one of the animals gave birth to six puppies shortly after being taken into shelter care.

The Capital Area Humane Society was notified the morning of Thursday, May 21, about the situation and, after making contact with the owner, contacted the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office for further assistance.

Julia Willson, president of the Capital Area Humane Society, exclusively spoke to PEOPLE about the rare case and the current condition of the dogs, which she described as surprisingly social and generally in stable health despite the unusual circumstances.

“We started receiving notification from community members regarding a man who was in the area who was seen in multiple locations with essentially a van full of dogs,” Willson began. “The videos were starting to creep up online.”…
