LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas Metro police officer killed in a shooting Tuesday, was “ambushed” by the suspect, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a press conference Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Aug. 4, Officer Austin Abdelnabi, 30, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a report of a person with a gun acting erratically and waving a firearm in the air at a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue near I-11 and Mountain Vista Street.

Abdelnabi was a U.S. Marine veteran who had been with the department since November 2023. Abdelnabi had studied at Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from 2018 to 2022, according to his LinkedIn page.
On Wednesday, Sheriff McMahill held a press conference where he discussed the shooting and provided details on who Officer Abdelnabi was.
“He worked in our Southeast Area Command, and he was known for his giant personality. Always laughing, even when his field training officers were ‘trying’ to provide him guidance,” McMahill said. “Austin was also known for talking about how much he loved his wife, Sage.”…
