Slick roads in Las Vegas could mean major fines for some drivers

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Las Vegas valley is dealing with rainy days which can cause slippery road conditions for drivers. Those who are not careful could face fines for not driving safely in the rain.

Las Vegas area roads get slick within the first 10 minutes of rain as the oil from the road mixes with the water which can reduce traction. If you’re going too fast in rainy conditions even if you aren’t driving faster than the posted speed limit, you can be pulled over.

Trooper Shawn Haggstrom has seen his fair share of crashes in rainy weather, and he said you can be ticketed for not driving with due care. It’s a little-known Nevada law that says drivers have a duty to decrease speed under certain circumstances one of those being weather conditions.

The law is NRS 484B.603 , and the penalties include a ticket that could cost you up to a thousand dollars.

“Two of our major contributions to crashes here in the Vegas Valley is rain and speed,” Trooper Haggstrom explained. His advice for dealing with the slick roads. “If the speed limit is 45mph, I would suggest doing maybe 35mph.”
