Independent grocers face uphill battle with rising costs

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Food banks across the nation are grappling with funding and donation shortages following the Department of Agriculture’s decision to halt $500 million in food deliveries.

This development, coupled with changing tariff and trade policies, is impacting grocery bills for consumers.

Mario Berlanga, owner of Mario’s Westside Market in Las Vegas for nearly 30 years, is feeling the pressure. “I go out there and I search different companies to get the best price I can get,” he said. However, competing with larger grocery chains has become increasingly difficult. “It’s ten times harder on the independent grocer. We get leftovers. The big companies that order truckloads get the better price and they get the availability… us independents can only get what’s left over and the prices are higher,” Berlanga explained…
