Las Vegas police request new fence to solve deadly problem

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – No one predicts the 1,500-foot chain-link hurdle will solve the century-old problems of Boulder Highway; however, Las Vegas police said they are not going to sit on the fence while fatalities rise.

A fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Boulder Highway on Thursday continues the question if more should be done with the deadly road, which residents used to call “ The Shambles .” Last year, Clark County workers received an idea on how to respond specifically to illegal crossings in the area.

“At the request of Las Vegas Metro Police, Clark County’s Department of Public Works installed fencing along a center median as an effort to deter pedestrians from unsafely crossing Boulder Highway,” a Clark County spokesperson wrote in response to an 8 News Now request. “The fencing located between East Flamingo Road and South Nellis Boulevard was installed in October 2024 as a test section to study its effectiveness.”

The idea, appearing to find success as Clark County confirmed the fencing will be expanded from East Flamingo to East Sahara along Boulder Highway, a date for construction was not provided.
