Measles cases in the U.S. reach highest levels since 2000

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Measles cases in the United States have surged to their highest levels since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000, with more than 1,200 cases reported since the start of the year. Dr. Agatha Formoso of Intermountain Health emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that measles is not just a mild rash but a highly contagious illness with potentially severe complications.

“The best way to protect yourself and your family from measles is by staying current on immunizations,” said Dr. Formoso. She highlighted the effectiveness and safety of the measles vaccine, addressing concerns some parents may have.

Measles is transmitted through coughs and sneezes and can linger in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. It infects 90 percent of unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus.
