World-renowned architect who designed wavy steel building in Las Vegas dies

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Architect Frank Gehry had a distinctive style when it came to designing buildings. There was nothing traditional about his sculptural, eye-catching steel creations.

One of his buildings is in Las Vegas. It’s the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health near downtown in Symphony Park and is somewhat visible from I-15 northbound, especially on a sunny day.

Lou Ruvo, a business executive and philanthropist, jump-started the project. His father had died of Alzheimer’s and had to travel to California to receive treatment. Gehry signed on as the architect, and the first dirt was turned in 2007; it opened in 2010.

The wavy steel structure was the first organization to open in Symphony Park. The Los Angeles Times said, “Frank Gehry’s new design really gets neurons firing.”

Gehry has created many iconic buildings, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Museum in Spain, the Weisman Art Museum in Minnesota, and the Dancing House in the Czech Republic…
