“I Failed,”; Metro Sheriff Self Assess Effort to Reduce Traffic Fatalities

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sheriff admits not reaching goals set in 2025 when it comes to people dying in traffic-related deaths.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the issue is the bane of his existence at the moment as data shows 154 people killed in crashes as of Dec. 12. It’s creeping closer to the 160 total people killed in 2024, making it one of the deadliest years in at least a decade for the department.

“I’m asking my officers to increase the numbers of stops and the focus on the violations that lead to these fatalities,” McMahill said. “But I have to give myself an “F” quite frankly, on that, I failed. I haven’t driven those numbers down. I don’t accept failure.”…
