FBI alert cautions of increase in ATM ‘jackpotting’ attacks to steal cash

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Targeting ATMs has reached a whole new level, and the FBI is cautioning banks about an increase in “jackpotting” incidents across the country.

FBI Las Vegas posted an alert Friday morning, describing how malware is being used to manipulate ATMs to dispense cash without a legitimate transaction.

“This type of #crime caused $20 million in losses in 2025 alone,” according to the post. The FBI has been in communication with banks, issuing an “FBI Flash” alert on Friday to encourage taking steps to mitigate the problem.

The jackpotting attacks cause the machines to spit out cash without the use of a bank card, a customer account, or a bank authorization. Customer accounts aren’t even targeted, and the “fast cash-out operations” are so fast that they sometimes aren’t detected until the money is withdrawn…
