Las Vegas Culinary Union pushes to make ‘No Taxes on Tips’ permanent

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Culinary Union gathered more than 100 tipped workers and shop stewards Saturday for a meeting with Nevada Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford to discuss efforts to make the “No Taxes on Tips” policy permanent and review how current tax laws affect hospitality workers ahead of the filing deadline.

The meeting, held at the Culinary Union headquarters, also included Assemblymember Linda Hunt. Union leaders and workers reviewed the existing tip income deduction, discussed what it means for workers preparing their taxes, and heard directly from Horsford about his proposed Tipped Income Protection and Improvement Act.

Union officials said the meeting is part of a broader organizing effort, with a larger “No Taxes on Tips” event planned for late March that is expected to bring together hundreds of union members.

“For decades, the Culinary Union has led the fight to eliminate the sub-minimum wage and to protect tipped workers from unfair taxation,” said Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union. “Now we are fighting to make No Taxes on Tips permanent nationwide.”…
