Notorious hackers target Canvas in widespread outage

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Canvas, a learning management system used by millions across the country and by students and staff in the Las Vegas Valley, was back online Thursday night after a hacking incident left the website inoperable for hours.

Hackers identifying themselves as “ShinyHunters” posted a message demanding a ransom as schools and universities across the nation reported the incident and urged students and staff to stay off the website and watch for suspicious links.

Experts said around 9,000 schools were hit, including UNLV. Canvas is owned and operated by Instructure and is described by some as a digital classroom…
