EXPLORING GWINNETT’S HISTORY: Elisha Winn Fair being held this weekend

The Elisha Winn Fair is coming up this Saturday and Sunday. The Fair is held on the grounds of the Elisha Winn House at 908 Dacula Road in Dacula and is free and open to the public, with live music all day, food and craft vendors, historical interpreters, and tours of the house and other historic buildings.

In anticipation of the Fair, there is one person this annual event would not be possible without, Amos Hutchins — an amazing man who preserved the oldest house in metro Atlanta.

Amos Hutchins was born on Sept. 24, 1913, in a formerly enslaved dwelling turned sharecropper house on the Winn House property. He was number six of 15 children born to Coley Hutchins and Viola May Hood Hutchins. Amos’ grandparents were enslaved, including Lemuel Hutchins, who was from Africa, and he was sold with his two sisters in Virginia to Nathan Hutchins and brought south to Duluth.
