ATLANTA — Federal agents say they’ve intercepted more than 200 high-powered firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and large quantities of fentanyl and methamphetamine as part of an ongoing investigation into a gun trafficking network linked to Mexican drug cartels.
Officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) held a joint press conference in Atlanta Friday, revealing new details about a multi-state operation targeting weapons being illegally funneled from Georgia and beyond to violent criminal groups across the southern border.
“ATF’s primary mission is to reduce the violent crime and combat firearms trafficking by cartels and terrorist organizations,” said Benjamin Gibbons, ATF’s Special Agent in Charge for the Atlanta Field Division. “Cartels have infiltrated the United States and, through the southern border, are operating in all major states and cities across the country.”…
