Popular Mexican restaurant closed by Lexington health department. Here’s why

A popular Mexican restaurant in Lexington has been shut down by the health department.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department closed Jalapeno’s Restaurant at 1030 S. Broadway on Oct. 14. According to the department, it was closed for evidence of rodents.

The inspection report will not be available until the health department’s investigation is complete after the restaurant reopens.

It’s unclear when it will be allowed to reopen. No date had been set for re-inspection, as of Thursday.

Recent Lexington restaurant closures by health inspectors

It’s at least the fourth establishment that has been closed in recent weeks:

  • Common Grounds, 3100 Old Todds Road #100, was closed after an inspection on Sept. 3 found that the health department inspection placard had been removed from public view. The coffee shop reopened after inspection on Sept. 10 with a score of 99.
  • Speedway at 900 Winchester Road was closed after an inspection on Sept. 9 found multiple issues, including sewage/waste water from an unknown source coming into the store. It was allowed to reopen Sept. 11 after passing re-inspection.
  • Kung Fu Noodle at 535 S. Upper St. in the CenterCourt complex was closed Sept. 24 for repeated failures of priority violations. It reopened Sept. 29.

Restaurants are closed when the health department finds an imminent risk to public health, such as insect or rodent infestation, lack of running water or sewage contamination. Restaurants can also be closed if the establishment scores too low during an inspection…
