LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — The first full moon of 2024 rises Thursday night across central and eastern Kentucky, known as the wolf moon.
It got its name because wolves seem to howl more at night and do so during the winter season. These are all tactics wolves use to locate pack members, define territory, and coordinate hunting.

January’s full moon is one of the few astronomy events of the winter season, as there are few meteor showers, planetary alignments, or other captivating sights we typically gaze at.
While the full moon peaks at 12:54 p.m. EST Thursday, it remains full for viewing over the next few nights.
Like many other moons throughout the year, there are other names for January’s full moon, which include center moon (as it occurs in the middle of winter), cold moon, and ice moon.
