Taylor Nolan, a University of Kentucky sophomore, died by suicide on January 8, 2019. Five years on, her mother, Taylora Schlosser, reflects on Taylor’s life and legacy. Known for her kindness and positivity, Taylor’s death led her family to establish a non-profit organization, Rae of Sunshine, to address mental health stigma and suicide.

By February 2019, Rae of Sunshine was established. The organization aims to raise mental health awareness, provide support and training across Kentucky, and contribute to the community. Taylora started her advocacy by speaking to Taylor’s Chi Omega sisters, expressing her wish to prevent other mothers from experiencing her pain.

Since its inception, Taylora has spoken to over 70,000 people and gained nearly 15,000 social media followers. The foundation has awarded $50,000 in scholarships to future mental health professionals. Taylora emphasizes the importance of expanding the movement, given the universal nature of mental health issues.

Rae of Sunshine has initiated SMILE Clubs in many schools, including the University of Kentucky. These clubs promote kindness and positivity, mirroring Taylor’s legacy. Taylora aims to ensure that no one feels alone or unappreciated.
