Kentucky bill limiting college diversity programs approved by committee

FRANKFORT, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Diversity, equity, and inclusion programs on college campuses were the topic of discussion during a Senate Education Committee meeting in Frankfort. A bill limiting those programs is moving forward.

Sen. Mike Wilson’s (R-Bowling Green) proposal targets how DEI would affect university hiring and admissions based on 16 ‘discriminatory concepts’ defined in the bill, such as whether a person’s race or sex makes them privileged. The concept definition specifically reads, ‘an individual, by virtue of the individual’s race or sex, is inherently privileged, racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or subconsciously.’

“This does not prohibit diversity initiatives. What the bill prohibits are the 16 discriminatory concepts to be utilized and promoted in those trainings or within the classroom, Sen. Wilson said.
