Brenda Cowan Elementary (BCE) students are commemorating Lt. Brenda Cowan, Lexington’s first Black female firefighter, who died on duty 20 years ago. The school, established in 2019, emphasizes service leadership, a value Cowan represented. Students engage in service projects throughout the week to honor her.

Principal Josh Williams spoke about Cowan’s dedication to children and service at a morning assembly. He also mentioned the significance of reading, with local firefighters visiting the school each February to read to students. This year, about 20 firefighters visited classrooms to read and answer questions.

During the week, students are motivated to serve others. Activities include complimenting strangers, cleaning up trash, leaving treats for mail carriers, holding doors for friends, interacting with new peers at recess, donating toys to shelters, writing encouraging notes to classmates, and preparing snacks for family.

Fire Chief Jason Wells encouraged students to emulate Cowan’s work ethic, positivity, and smile. He stressed that Cowan found fulfillment in serving others and continues to inspire students at the school.
