FBI investigating after Kentucky State Board of Elections receives suspicious package

The Kentucky State Board of Elections in Frankfort received a suspicious package containing a “white powder” on Tuesday, just a day after federal officials warned the office of suspicious envelopes being sent to election offices in other states.

Board Executive Director Karen Sellers said in a statement that an administrative specialist working Tuesday morning found the envelope and recognized it as suspicious. That worker did not open the envelope and was in the process of isolating it when they noticed a “white powder” fall from the envelope onto the ground.

State Board of Election officials alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigations and local law enforcement. Tests determined that the substance was nonhazardous, Sellers said, but she could not identify what the substance was, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

“We are grateful for the thoroughness of the FBI and USPS for their quickness to alert election offices across the country of the possibility of this mail potentially delivered to election offices,” Sellers said.
