Twice a week, a trailer with two showers, two restrooms and two washer-dryer sets helps the homeless in Lexington. The Catholic Action Center’s Dignity Station went into operation last year. One of the people who gets the Dignity Station where it’s going is Dennis Johnson, whose longtime employer sold him the 4X4 pickup truck that hauls the trailer for a dollar. We caught up with him Tuesday in a parking lot near the Lexington Rescue Mission.
“We do a lot of laundry, a lot of showers, and you see a lot of things that you know makes you just kind of thank the good Lord for your house and home and the bed when you climb into it and the shower and the commode and all that.”
Among the visitors on this day is Charlotte Johnson, who said she grew up in Canada and has been without a steady place to stay for the last six months.
“This is a gift. It’s a gift, especially in the summer, when it’s really, really hot. Um, it’s nice to know you can have a shower Tuesday here and Thursday down at Goodwill and get your clothes clean.”
