Lexington working hard to get people without shelter inside as winter approaches

LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A program that allows supplemental housing for the unsheltered in Lexington begins Friday. The program helps expand the city’s capacity to serve people who are experiencing homelessness during the cold months.

Two motels off Winchester Road will be providing a much-needed roof over people’s heads this winter. Right now, more than 300 applications have been submitted for those rooms and the city said more are expected.

Commissioner of Housing Advocacy & Community Development Charlie Lanter said that both motel rooms will provide security onsite 24/7, as well as food and resources to help people find employment and permanent housing.

The program is being funded through local tax dollars, which cost $1.8 million for the winter.

Lanter said those dollars not only cover the motel rooms but also some smaller sub-programs that house elderly people and families. Lanter is hopeful this program will keep people who don’t have a place to stay from being left out in the cold.
