Kentucky helps military-connected youth through national Purple Star Program

LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — According to recent data, about 50,000 Kentucky students report a military connection, whether active duty, national guard, reserve, or veteran. Many of them face unimaginable challenges.

FOX 56 recently sat down with leaders of one program that is working to connect with schools across the entire state to help bridge the gap and meet the needs of our military families.

George Rogers Clark High School has a well-known JROTC program throughout the state and country.

However, students involved said their love for the program and its leaders goes far beyond their team’s national championship status.

“They work really well with kids even that aren’t in the program,” said Tara Daniels, a senior student cadet. “They help us a lot with if you are interested in the military, or even if you’re not interested in the military. I’ve gotten so much life advice from them.”

“Actually, they were one of the most inspirational people to help me join the military,” added Ryan Turley, another senior student cadet. “And doing JROTC definitely helped with that. And right now, I’m in the Kentucky Army National Guard, and I’m glad I am.”
