Flipping fear: Kentucky group teaching kayakers to stay calm underwater

FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — For many new kayakers, flipping over in the water is the ultimate fear. But at a quiet pool of water off the Elkhorn in Frankfort, that fear is exactly what paddlers are learning to face head-on and overcome.

Every Thursday evening, the Bluegrass Wildwater Association hosts “rolling sessions,” where participants learn how to right a capsized kayak without exiting the boat—a skill called “rolling” that’s essential for whitewater safety.

“Throw the boat away with your hip … like that!” Hanley Loller, acting president of the association, instructed as he coached newcomers through the process.
