Midway therapist speaks on law enforcement mental trauma following church shooting

MIDWAY, Ky. (FOX 56) — First responders like police have to face a lot of mental trauma on the job, and with Sunday’s shooting in Lexington, law enforcement’s mental health is a big topic of discussion.

Dr. Blake Jones is a therapist and co-owner of The Compass Center in Midway. Jones has a lot of experience helping first responders through any emotional and/or mental trials they face on the job.

“This thing that happened the other day is kind of their worst nightmare,” Jones said.

In Sunday’s shooting, the department said officers shot Guy House when they caught up to him at Richmond Road Baptist Church after he had already shot four people. While the threat was neutralized, Jones said this is a very last resort decision to make.

“I’ve worked with a number of officers that have been involved in officer-involved shootings, and that truly is the very last thing that they want to do. They are trained to try everything else, and then when nothing else works, they have to do what they have to do,” Jones said…
