Just before 4:30 a.m. on July 6, University of Kentucky police officers said they were dispatched to Linden Walk after a campus police vehicle had been set on fire. The arrest warrant states that officers discovered two bottles of Expert Grill charcoal lighter fluid near the marked car.

Security camera footage captured a man in all-black clothing approaching the police car, then running away shortly before officers were alerted to the fire, according to court documents. The same man was reportedly seen on the next street over on security cameras. While in the area, a guest internet access account that authorities said was registered to 31-year-old Santosh Sharma connected to the university’s internet system.

On July 24, a UK police detective encountered Sharma in the North Limestone and Barr Street area. The detective reportedly recognized Sharma from a previous case and knew there was a warrant out for his arrest.
