Law now requires moments of reflection in Kentucky schools

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Some changes are coming in the classroom in Kentucky as students return.

  • Senate Bill 19, passed during the 2025 Legislative Session, requires moments of silence or reflection in schools
  • The law also requires districts to allow up to an hour of the school day be used for religious studies off-campus
  • A release said the law aims to provide a peaceful and focused start to the school day while respecting students’ individual beliefs
  • Jessamine County’s first day is Aug. 13

The days of summer break are fading, with many districts going back to class this month. Under state law, each school day begins with a moment of reflection.

“After the Pledge of Allegiance each day, they’ll be pausing for a moment of silence,” said Sara Crum, superintendent of Jessamine County Schools. “During that time, students can choose to pray; they can choose to meditate, reflect on the day before or even just mentally prepare for the day ahead.”…
