Reception to honor FCPS’ Liggins for winning Superintendent of the Year canceled

A nonprofit that supports Fayette County schools has canceled a reception to honor district leader Demetrus Liggins for being named Kentucky Superintendent of the Year.

The reception was scheduled for Aug. 18, before the Fayette County School District board meeting, but the nonprofit, the Fayette Education Foundation, said Friday it was canceling the event so the district could “focus on the work before the board that evening.”

The move comes amid significant budget troubles in the district, which faces a $16 million funding shortfall. On Thursday, Liggins said the district’s contingency fund was significantly smaller than originally expected — it was estimated to be about $42 million, but could actually be as low as $15 million to $22 million…
