University of Kentucky fires lab director for faking equine drug tests

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The University of Kentucky has fired the former equine testing lab director after an audit found evidence of falsified drug testing results, among other ethics and policy violations.

In 2019, the Marton-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment took over the Equine Analytical Chemistry Lab (ECAL) from the United States Equestrian Federation, and Dr. Scott Stanley was recruited as its director. According to an audit, this lab provides crucial drug testing services to “help promote the integrity of the equine industry.”

The investigation into Stanley, who was a tenured faculty member at the time, began in February 2024, according to the university, after leaders received a letter from the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU). The letter alleged that at least one test result that was personally communicated by Stanley had been falsified.
