First new park in 25 years opens in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (KT) – Lexington Parks & Recreation, Mayor Linda Gorton, council members and families were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony that officially opened Cardinal Run Park North.

“Cardinal Run Park North is the first large, regional park our community has opened in more than 25 years,” said Mayor Linda Gorton. “Regional parks play a vital role in Lexington – serving our entire city, as well as neighboring communities. They offer amenities you won’t find in neighborhood parks and provide wonderful places to enjoy green space alone or with family and friends. Beyond recreation, regional parks create a large green oasis for everyone to enjoy, showcasing native plants and wildlife for people to experience and learn about.”

The land that is now Cardinal Run Park North and South was donated to the community in 1997. Cardinal Run Park South opened in the early 2000s. The government could not afford to make the improvements needed to open Cardinal Run Park North until 2022, when the design and improvements were funded through an allocation of $10.1 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds…
