Salt shortage hits Kentucky stores after winter storm

JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – Hardware stores across Kentucky are struggling to keep salt and ice melt in stock after last weekend’s winter storm created high demand for snow removal supplies.

Great Lakes Ace Hardware in Jessamine County has sold out of salt completely, according to Benjamin Tomlian, the store’s floor manager. The store has also seen increased sales of shovels and ice picks as customers try to clear snow and ice from their properties.

“It’s been absolutely insane with how much stuff we’ve been selling because it ain’t just the salt either,” Tomlian said. “It’s been the shovels we’ve had to sell. With all the ice that’s come through, we’ve had to sell picks as well. Anything metal like metal shovels, flathead shovels, stuff like that.”

Supply shortages expected to continue

Tomlian said this year’s demand has exceeded what the store experienced during previous winter storms. Unlike last year, the store ran out of salt completely this time…
