Nicholasville sanitation worker helps injured woman after icy fall

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — What began as a normal workday for a sanitation worker who had only been on the job for less than a year quickly turned into an emergency response on a Nicholasville street Wednesday afternoon.

Jody Gifford, who had been working for Republic Services since last April, was midway through his trash pickup route when something caught his attention near a driveway. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed movement close to the ground and realized someone was waving.

“I was just coming around the curb about three houses down,” Gifford said. “In my peripheral vision, I saw an arm waving near her car.”

When he stopped, Gifford found Katie Hayes, a social worker and mother of two, lying on the ground in severe pain. Hayes said she fell on black ice while taking her trash bins out before leaving for the grocery store, resulting in broken bones in her lower leg…
