Weeks of empty classrooms prompt Fayette County Board of Education to weigh calendar shift

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — As desks in Fayette County classrooms have remained vacant for going on three weeks, the Fayette County school board will consider amending the instructional calendar.

According to a Fayette County Board of Education agenda, the board is considering having staff and students report on April 13, which was originally a day off for students following spring break.

“Due to recent inclement weather, Fayette County Public Schools intends to amend the 2025–2026 instructional calendar. Monday, April 13, 2026, will now be an instructional day for students and staff. The Board of Education will take formal action to approve the amended calendar at the end of the instructional year,” the agenda reads.

The district used four nontraditional instruction days and seven snow days as a result of the late January ice storm. Fayette County Schools has used a total of 10 snow days in the 2025-2026 school year…
