Paris principal uses Heimlich maneuver to save choking child

PARIS, Ky. (FOX 56) — According to the principal of Paris Elementary School, Lean Pickerill, things are typically pretty quiet. But on February 12, the day took a scary turn.

“There were three or four students running up from the gym saying, ‘He can’t breathe! He can’t breathe!’” Pickerill recounted to FOX 56.

At first, she thought the fourth-grade boy at her office door was having an asthma attack. But then, she said, he grabbed his throat, giving “the universal sign for, ‘I’m choking.’”

Pickerill said she’s been trained in CPR and first aid since she was about 16 years old. Those years of knowledge came in handy as she performed the Heimlich maneuver on the young boy gasping for air…
