LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The Lexington Humane Society just got a little more crowded after 53 kittens and cats—some of which were pregnant—were removed from a home over the weekend after the occupant was evicted.
“53. Yes, so that is an expensive expense to incur unexpectedly. We estimate about $10,000 additional to care for these cats in addition to the hundreds of dogs and cats currently in our care,” said Meghan Hawkins, director of development for the Lexington Humane Society.

Hawkins said, unlike many situations where so many cats are living in one space, the living conditions for these cats were fairly clean. But it’s a perfect example of how quickly one unaltered cat can lead to dozens in a short amount of time — and why the Humane Society and animal control officers are here to help.
“We have our Spay’s the Way Program, and that’s free or low-cost surgery that we offer to the community. It does not have to be a dog or cat that’s currently in our care,” Hawkins said. “Every dog and cat that goes up for adoption through us they have been fixed beforehand. So every little thing we can do to kind of prevent the pet overpopulation problem.”…
