Georgetown police warn travelers of scammers targeting hotels

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (FOX 56) — Officers in Georgetown are warning travelers and hotel employees about scams impersonating hotel staff or company representatives to trick victims into handing over money or credit card information.

The warning came after a recent spike in scam calls targeting local hotels. According to the Georgetown Police Department, the scammers became more creative in their attempts to steal from both hotel staff and guests.

Lt. Jake Barrish with Georgetown police said scammers often spend time developing elaborate stories designed to pressure victims into acting quickly.

“Scammers, they have all day to come up with their next big plot,” Barrish said. “Recently, the hotel business has been a focal point for them. They’ll call either a staff member at the hotel or even a guest in their room and pitch an idea. Usually, it involves some kind of urgency for them to withdraw cash.”…
