VisitLEX unveils 12-foot statue of Big Lex the legendary stallion at Gatton Park

LEXINGTON, Ky. — In the heart of the Horse Capital of the World, a new icon is taking its place. VisitLEX, with the support of Councilmember Chuck Ellinger and Gatton Park on the Town Branch, are proud to announce the official unveiling of a custom, 12-foot-tall “Big Lex” that took place at 11 a.m. March 24, at the corner of Cox Street and Manchester Street in the park.

The installation arrives just days after the March 17 birthday of the real-life Thoroughbred legend, Lexington, the 19th-century stallion who sired more winners than any Thoroughbred in history. The blue horse serves as a permanent bridge between the city’s rich Thoroughbred history, equine heritage, and its modern identity.

“Cultural landmarks breathe life into a great urban space, and we are thrilled that Gatton Park will serve as the permanent home for this tribute to Lexington’s equine heritage,” said Allison Lankford, CEO of Gatton Park. “This sculpture is designed to be an interactive landmark where families can gather, visitors can take photos, and our entire community can feel a profound sense of pride in the Thoroughbred legacy that started right here in Lexington.”…
