Nebraska baseball’s hosting party comes with an expensive postseason catch

Congratulations to the Nebraska baseball team for securing a Regional tournament. It’s not easy and it hasn’t happened around here since 2008. However, if you’re thinking it is just another day at the ballpark, you are sadly misinformed. Game 1 is Friday at 3pm versus South Dakota State Jackrabbits. I read online that the cheapest ticket price is $144. That’s probably for the berm, too. You have also probably read about the season ticket holder backlash. To sum it up, they are unhappy they don’t get their same seats offered to them for the Regional games.

The cold hard facts are that postseason college baseball is not about the fans or the loyal season ticket holders. It’s all about the corporate dollar and the NCAA getting their fingers into your wallet. This is nothing new. Just talk to those perennial CWS teams from the SEC and they will let you in on how it works.

If you need further explanation, look at the College World Series. When they moved the tournament from Rosenblatt to downtown it was a true corporate takeover. To their credit, they did give the past season ticket holders a chance to renew their seats, but you were automatically moved down the row (or to a new side) because they made the really good seats available to the corporate, VIP and NCAA people. If you volunteered to spend more money and buy Creighton baseball tickets, you weren’t shoved as far down but that wasn’t disclosed in the fine print…
