Lincoln, Papillion La Vista schools considering Pre-K-2 suspensions following state law change

Board members at Lincoln Public Schools and Papillion La Vista Community Schools will discuss allowing suspensions for students in prekindergarten through second grade for violent behavior that could cause physical harm.

The policy change is on both boards’ agendas: Monday for Papillion La Vista and Tuesday for Lincoln. The Nebraska Legislature this year changed a law to allow suspensions of young students for violent behavior that could result in physical harm after initially banning those suspensions in 2023. The law previously only allowed suspensions if a student brought a weapon to school.

Nebraska Public Media News reached out to the two schools earlier this month, along with several of the other larger districts, to learn how they planned to respond to that law after Omaha Public Schools chose to keep its current policy of only suspending in cases of a weapon being brought to campus.
