Nebraska Drivers Could See More RCUTs and Roundabouts in the Future

Nebraska- Nebraska transportation officials are increasingly turning to roundabouts and reduced conflict intersections, otherwise known as J-turns, in an effort to reduce serious and fatal crashes.

Throughout the state, Lincoln has 72 of the roughly 250 roundabouts statewide, with the city’s first roundabout, located at 33rd Street and Sheridan Boulevard, having reduced crashes by 73% and injury crashes by 80$ since it was installed in 2002. Roundabouts have been seen reducing the number of potential vehicle conflict points, along with helping prevent severe head-on and right-angle crashes.

Omaha has also seen significant safety improvements. A mini roundabout at 63rd and Shirley streets reduced the average number of crashes by about 80%, with no fatal or injury crashes reported there since its installation in 2017…
