Lincoln Christian School, determined to bolster security beyond ballistic film at entryways, seeks a proactive solution: arming qualified staff.
Superintendent Zach Kassebaum envisions a trained, volunteer security team equipped to defend students and staff should existing measures fail.
According to KETV7 Omaha, the proposal in question hinges on Senator Tom Brewer’s bill, which would overturn current Nebraska law restricting firearms on school property to on-duty law enforcement.
“We need a way once they get through that (existing security measures and structures), then we have the opportunity to defend ourself, protect students, and protect staff,” Kassebaum said.
“It’s going to be those people that have the aptitude and the ability and want to receive extensive training to be put in this position,” he added.
While Kassebaum emphasizes rigorous training and aptitude selection for potential armed staff, the Nebraska State Education Association expresses concerns about potential risks.
President Jenni Benson advocates for increased resources and mental health support, arguing that “we need to arm ourselves with more resources…. not weapons.”
