The Nebraska football team got exactly what it expected on Saturday night against a tough and physical Northern Iowa team, and despite some issues here and there, moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2016 with a 34-3 win.

The Huskers will open Big Ten play on Friday night when Illinois comes to Lincoln, giving the Huskers one less day to prepare. Still, the team was pleased with the outcome on Saturday.

  • UNI’s offense repeatedly pounded the rock against the Blackshirts and had some early success in a 10-minute, 16-play opening drive that resulted in the Panthers’ lone points of the night. Nebraska’s tackling contributed to some of UNI’s success, with defenders bouncing off the big Panthers backs and failing to wrap up many times. Nebraska was happier with the unit’s play in the second half.

“I felt like, early on, we didn’t tackle as well as we normally do, but I did like the energy the defense came out with in the second half,” Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said after the game. A couple Blackshirt leaders echoed that sentiment.
