Arbor Day Foundation awards $8 million in Indigenous forestry grants

The Arbor Day Foundation in Lincoln, Nebraska, has announced awards totaling $8 million in support of community forestry on or near Indigenous lands. The 16 recipients include federally recognized Tribes, Tribal organizations, and organizations working in Tribal communities and supported projects range from food sovereignty to workforce development. Grants were subawarded in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, which awarded $50 million to the foundation through the 2023 Inflation Reduction Act. Recipients include Bay Mills Indian Community with Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, Native Village of Tyonek, Omaha Tribe of Nebraska with Midlands Community Foundation, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
