Nebraskans lose out on $100 million in earmarked federal funding

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Roughly $100 million earmarked for projects in Nebraska won’t be coming trickling down from the federal government this year. That, after the stopgap funding bill passed by Congress kept the government running but didn’t allow room for new projects.

That means deputies working in the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office won’t get the $1,091,000 they were hoping for. The money would have purchased brand new, better body-worn and cruiser cameras, along with tasers – hard to do with the agency’s modest $18 million budget.

“A million plus is big‚ and it it does hurt,” LSO Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said. “We have to make sure our equipment works on our people, and that’s the number one thing for the safety and transparency on it.”…
