City officials discuss new Heat Response Plan

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird, LLCHD Director Kerry Kernen and other local officials discussed the City’s new Heat Response Plan Thursday morning.

The City of Lincoln launched its Climate Action Plan in 2021, which included a key initiative to create a Heat Response Plan for Lincoln and Lancaster County. The Health Department has led the development of the plan to help the community prepare for and respond to extreme heat events.

Heat – on average – is responsible for more fatalities every year than any other weather or severe weather hazard. According to the most recent data from the National Weather Service and the CDC, the 10-year average (2014-2023) for heat-related deaths is 222, and in 2023 more than 500 people were killed due to heat related conditions…
